 Hearing before the Subcom on Asian and Pacific Affairs to examine the
 political situation in Hong Kong in light of the June 1989 People's Republic
 of China (PRC) suppression of pro-democracy demonstrations in the PRC and
 the planned 1997 return of Hong Kong to PRC control as mandated by the 1984
 PRC-United Kingdom agreement on the future of Hong Kong.
   Also considers the implications of recent events for U.S. policy toward
 Hong Kong.
   Includes transcript (p. 54-60) of Subcom markup session on H. Con. Res.
 227 (text, p. 55-58), to urge the United Kingdom to lead an international
 initiative to grant the right of abode in various countries for Hong Kong
 residents in the event of PRC political repression in Hong Kong after 1997.
