Eighteenth in a series of volumes based on previously unpublished executive
session transcripts of hearings before the Committee on Foreign Affairs on
important foreign policy issues, 1943-56.
This volume focuses on U.S. policy toward Southeast Asia and Communist
China and is divided into two sections as follows:
a. Hearings relating to French involvement in Indochina and U.S. relations
with Southeast Asian and Far Eastern countries (p. 1-244).
b. Hearings relating to Communist takeover of mainland China, Chinese
representation in the UN, and U.S. relations with the Nationalist
Chinese Government on Formosa (Taiwan) (p. 245-513).
Hearings were held on May 3, 1952, before the Subcom on Europe and the
Subcom on the Far East and the Pacific Ocean Area; and on Apr. 24, July 24,
29-31, 1953, Feb. 18, July 9, 1954, and Mar. 2-3, 17, and 24, 1955, before
the Subcom on the Far East and the Pacific.
Includes introductions to major sections (p. 5-10, 249-254) and notes
throughout prepared by University of Pittsburgh faculty and staff. Also
includes correspondence (p. 368-370).
