Report of separate Aug. 1977 congressional study missions, to Asia by
Subcom on Foreign Assistance staff members and to Korea and Japan by Subcom
on East Asian and Pacific Affairs Chairman Sen. John Glenn (D-Ohio), issued
in anticipation of committee hearings on impact on Far East security of
planned phased withdrawal of U.S. ground combat forces from South Korea.
Includes: summary and recommendations (p. 1-6); analysis of Korean
peninsula's regional significance, North and South Korean military balance,
and U.S. troop withdrawal impact (p. 7-42); and review of planned U.S.
military and economic assistance to South Korea, South Korean domestic
defense industry, and status of human rights in North and South Korea (p.
43-62).
Appendices (p. 63-85) include political and economic background
information on South Korea.
